How to take a UAE passport photo with your phone
The size we list for the Emirati passport is 40×60 mm on a plain white background, printed at 300 DPI. This document has not been checked against an official source yet, so it carries the standard badge rather than the verified one: treat the numbers as a starting point and confirm them with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security before you print a full sheet.
The framing follows the ICAO rules behind every modern passport, so the head should fill about 70–80% of the picture height, measured from the chin to the crown, with both eyes looking straight into the lens. Stand around 1.5 metres from a white wall, phone at eye level on the rear camera, daylight coming from a window in front of you. Shoot wider than the final rectangle and let us cut to size — an extra centimetre of wall is free, a missing shoulder is not.
Why a UAE passport photo comes back
White on white is the problem specific to this photo. A white kandura and a white ghutra in front of a white wall leave the office with a floating head and no visible shoulder line, and the same happens with a pale hijab. The fix is not a darker background — it is light that falls slightly more on you than on the wall, so stand a good step away from it and face your light source. A head covering is accepted when the whole face stays visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
After that the usual causes: a shadow thrown behind the head by a single lamp or a ceiling light, a smile with teeth instead of a neutral expression, glare across a lens, a photo cropped out of a bigger picture so the face is soft, and a background that has picked up a colour cast from a warm bulb.
Where a UAE passport photo is used
The same photo generally serves the passport application and renewal and the residency, identity and family paperwork handled through the authority's service centres and its smart applications. Keep the digital file next to the prints: counters still ask for physical photos, and online forms ask for the file. Because this specification is not verified, check the current requirement on the authority's own channel before you submit.
